Leonard Maltin calls Jane Alexander “one of the finest actresses working in America to-day (in any medium).” This proudly unglamorous actress, coming to us fresh from her Emmy win for her performance in the HBO film WARM SPRINGS, is noted for her finely delineated characterizations. Alexander made her Broadway debut in 1969 in The Great White Hope, for which she won a Tony Award and snagged an Oscar nomination for reprising the role on film. She picked up two other nominations for ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN and KRAMER VS. KRAMER, and then played her signature role, Eleanor Roosevelt, in two Emmy-winning dramas: ELEANOR AND FRANKLIN and ELEANOR AND FRANKLIN: THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS. She won another Oscar nomination for her role in TESTAMENT. Most of her best opportunities have come in made-for-TV movies: PLAYING FOR TIME (Emmy Award), CALAMITY JANE, MALICE IN WONDERLAND, BLOOD AND ORCHIDS, IN LOVE AND WAR and DAUGHTER OF THE STREETS. In 1993, Alexander was named by President Clinton to head the National Endowment for the Arts. She serves on the Boards of Wildlife Conservation Society, Project Greenhope, the National Stroke Association, and Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament. She has been honored with the Israel Cultural Award and the Helen Caldicott Leadership Award.
